Dr Cathal Heavey qualified from The University of Manchester with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). While studying there he achieved the SOMANDA (Alumni Association for Manchester School of Dentistry) award for the top overall results in fourth year examinations and the following year he was awarded the Charles H Preston Medal for the highest results in the final examinations.
Once qualified Cathal spent two years in the UK - based in Cardiff. During this time, he split his work between the University of Cardiff Dental Hospital and an outreach general Practice in the Welsh Valleys.
Whilst in Cardiff Hospital he gained valuable experience working under consultants in the areas of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Periodontology and Emergency Dentistry. The rest of his working time was spent in the Welsh Valleys where he worked in an area of high dental need treating complex restorative cases. Whilst there Cathal took part in over 50 additional day courses developing all areas of his dental skills and knowledge.
During his time in the UK he obtained the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Cathal takes a keen interest in treating anxious patients, particularly those who have not attended the dentist for some time and he finds these cases particularly rewarding.
Cathal has always been very active and in his free time can be found bringing his four-year-old Beagle for a run or a hike in the Wicklow mountains or alternatively he can be found attempting to surf on the West coast of Ireland.
