Implant at Avondale Dental Clinic
Implants are the biggest step forward made in dentistry in the last one hundred years. They have multiple applications in that they can be used to replace a single missing tooth, or multiples of them can be used to replace a complete arch of teeth. At Avondale Dental Clinic the team have been placing and restoring dental implants for many years. We use a team approach with Dr Burgees carrying out the surgical placement of the implant and either Dr Begley or Dr Grant restoring the implant crown.
What is a Tooth Implant?
A single implant used to replace a single missing tooth is made of 2 parts. The piece which is placed in the bone is a titanium screw which the body accepts and integrates with, and the piece on top is called the implant crown -this is the visible portion. This mimics a tooth -the implant within the bone replacing the root of the tooth, and the implant crown replacing the missing tooth structure on top.
Why do you need a Tooth Implant?
A tooth implant is needed to replace a missing tooth, to fill the gap left behind and restore stability in your mouth.

Multiple missing teeth
Multiple missing teeth can also be replaced with implants. For each missing tooth it may be necessary to place an individual implant, but it is sometimes possible to have a single implant carry 2 missing teeth. Each case is investigated, and the best treatment plan proposed.
When a patient is missing a complete arch of teeth multiple implants can be placed to solidly retain a denture. This is often the case when a patient is unable to hold in a denture or their denture is very unstable. Implants are the closest thing to a natural tooth.

Paul exclusively treats periodontal (gum) disease and places implants. He also carries out minor oral surgery procedures.
Treatment Process
Very often a patient presents at the clinic with a tooth that cannot be fixed or a space that they would like filled with an implant. In the initial consultation, with the dentist, many options may be discussed before an implant is considered the most suitable solution. A consultation with our periodontist Dr Burgess is arranged and he ascertains whether there is enough bone in height, width and depth in which to place an implant. If removal of a non-restorable tooth is needed it may be extracted at this appointment and bone substitute placed if need be. As with all dentistry in Avondale Dental Clinic if you suffer with dental anxiety dental sedation can be provided.
The space may be in an aesthetically key area such as in the front of the n mouth. If this is the case, on the day the damaged tooth is extracted, we provide a provisional tooth in the form of a removable denture or a provisional bridge. You will never leave the clinic without a tooth in an aesthetically key area. Dental implants are now the standard of care for missing teeth.
Occasionally on the day of the extraction, or more usually six weeks after the extraction, a dental implant is surgically placed in your jaw bone and allowed to integrate. Dr Burgess places our dental implants. He has placed hundreds of dental implants and uses multiple systems such as Straumann, Axiom, and Nobel Biocare. This is the foundation on which we built a dental implant crown. Once the implant has integrated (10 weeks later) the implant crown is fitted. The implant crown procedure is usually carried out by Dr Begley or Dr Grant. Together with the patient the correct shade of crown is chosen, so your implant crown matches your natural teeth.
Advantages of Dental implants
It can replace a missing tooth without and destruction of the adjacent teeth ie it is stand alone.
After a period, you forget you even have an implant.
The success rate is high with 92% of implants still working after 10 years.
Things to consider
- As with any major dental repair treatment, there will be some pain in the area of the procedure. This pain may be treated with over-the-counter pain relief medication.
- If the dentist has administered local anaesthesia, there could possibly be some feelings of tingly numbness or slight wooziness. This may depend on the patient’s tolerance level to anaesthesia.
- After the patient receives the dental implants, it is important to follow the same good oral hygiene care of regular teeth. A solid brushing routine of at least twice daily, regular flossing, and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash is very important for the maintenance of the new implants.
- It takes time- up to 6 months in some case to complete an implant
- Achieving natural gum architecture can be difficult
